Medical coders are trained professionals whose main responsibility is to read and input all patient information and physicians’ notes regarding medical diagnoses, surgical operations and other procedures into a database. This database utilizes special medical insurance numeric codes in order to process hospital and physician claims, billings and patient reimbursements. Documentations provided by health care professionals are heavily relied on in order for coders to establish and assign the correct codes from a manual, the ICD-9 and CPT manuals. Knowledge of the disease process is also imperative in this line of work.
Medical coders must ensure completeness and accuracy of information to adhere to insurance regulations. It is their responsibility to maintain comprehensive and accurate medical records in order to provide for proper health care. They verify patient signatures, patient information, medical data and medical history to construct organized records necessary for storage and easy retrieval.
Medical coders usually work without direct contact with patients. Due to their nature of work, the bulk of a coder’s job is done in front of computer monitors and paying really close attention to detail. Typically, they work in a doctor’s office, private practice, clinic, dental office, home health agencies, hospital finance departments, insurance companies, private billing firms and government agencies.
Individuals who are interested in pursuing an education to become a medical coder should possess a high school diploma or its equivalent. It is also recommended for students who want to be considered for admission into a medical coding program to take biology, algebra, chemistry, English and computer skills courses in high school in order to increase their chances for admission.
Prospective medical coding students have a lot options in obtaining a medical coding degree or medical coding training. One way is to enroll in a medical coding program offered at universities, medical coding colleges or from community colleges. A medical coding program that is two years in length and is taken with general education courses will grant students the eligibility to graduate with an Associate’s Degree. A four year program awards students with a Bachelor’s Degree.
Students can also enroll in a certificate program in medical coding at community colleges or at technical colleges. A certificate in medical coding can usually be obtained within two semesters. A medical coding certificate program covers training in medical terminology, data analysis, ICD-9 and CPT coding and data management. To qualify for admission to the certificate program, students will have to adhere to the general requirements set by the community college.
In addition to traditional schools, a medical coding degree can also be obtained through accredited distance learning or online schools which offer medical coding training programs. Online medical coding programs allow individuals to continue on with their regular jobs and at the same time study at home in their own pace and time towards a medical coding degree. Online training offers medical coding certificates that can be obtained in less than a year or an Associates’ Degree in coding which can take for about two years.
